Wedding Photographic Society Blog bio picture

Welcome to The Wedding Photographic Society (WPS). We're a network of professional photographers who come together to collaborate on photographic ideas, thoughts, and information in an attempts to elevate the artistic, technical, and business standards of the wedding photographic community. Membership in the WPS offers many professional & personal growth opportunities via bi-monthly educational meetings, networking, critiques, and general camaraderie during such gatherings. WPS meetings, forums, blog submissions, & web pages are open to any and all professional wedding photographers throughout the world.

The WPS's origins date back to 2005, when North Carolina photographer Christobal Perez organized quarterly photography meetings in an effort to help build relationships, share knowledge amongst peers, and help create a competitive, yet supportive photographic community. The spirit of Christobal's movement has grown exponentially since that time and has since evolved into the WPS(which became official in 2009) with the further support of other local photographers, Shane Snider, Robin Lin, Martha Manning, Stacy Borelli, & Brian Mullins. Leaders & members of the WPS donate their time to organize topic discussions with guest speakers, collaborate on ideas and offer guidance, all without compensation.

With an initial membership of over 60 photographers, the decision was made to open our doors worldwide in attempts to share this movement throughout the world. With that goal in mind, the WPS launched their website, forums, & blogs to bring together the professional wedding photographic community. Information presented at each meeting will be available on the web for all to enjoy and benefit from. To officially become a member of the WPS simply create an account on our forum (www.weddingphotographicsociety.com/forum) and contribute helpful items and of course, your photographs!

Thank you for being a member of the WPS and we look forward to your future contributions to the society.

Minutes of Meeting - Jan. 26th ‘10 - Photo Contests announced

What a great pre-meeting and meeting we had this go around! Everyone was involved and in a great sharing mood. The turnout I believe to be our best yet with over 40 peeps in attendance. We probably could’ve used the second garage at Hi-5! Thanks to Robin Lin for organizing the Round Table topic where any topic regarding photography  was kosher.

To start off, our pre-meeting wrapped up with us all agreeing that for 2010 we are Contest Bound! YAHOOO! I know everyone is excited about this and we look forward to everyone participating. This aspect of sharing will help us to grow and evolve as a prominent photography group.

Contest is open to all current and subscribing members of the WPS.

Contest Outline for 2010 - (details of where to submit will follow after the Feb. meeting)

Categories for each Contest will always include the following categories - (One entry per category, per photographer)

Photos submitted must have been shot within the past year of the contest date. Please also note that photos entered in contests must be photos that were taken at an actual wedding, engagement session, or bridal session. Nothing staged or put on is allowed for entry. Persons entering photos which are deemed such will be disqualified from all categories for that judging period. Photos are only allowed to be entered into one category per contest per calendar year. Regarding content, no derogatory, suggestive, or perverse images will be allowed in the contest.

Photojournalism - a candid moment captured as it unfolded on the wedding day. Minimal dodging and burning. B&W and light sepia accepted. No other photoshopped enhancements for this category.

Artistic - Is just that! Bring your best art forward for this category from the wedding day. Photoshop is allowed.

There will also be 3 alternating categories per contest period. We ask for your help and suggestions for category ideas for outstanding contests. Let’s chat on the boards!

  • Submissions begin for Contest 1 - March 15th-30th
  • Winners will be announced at the April meeting.
  • Submissions begin for Contest 2 - June 15th-30th
  • Winners will be announced at the July meeting
  • Submissions begin for Contest 3 - September 15th-30th
  • Winners will be announced at the October meeting

For Contest 1, the additional categories are:

  • Portraits - bridal, engagement, or staged wedding day portraits.
  • Emotion - captures the essence and sentiment of a day or scene
  • Scene Setter - tells the story of the day, sets the mood of the wedding

Prizes per quarter - we’re looking for donations! 1st-3rd will receive prizes.

  • 1st place = 5 points
  • 2nd place = 3 points
  • 3rd place = 1 point
  • you will receive 1/2 point for each category entered. This will act as a tie breaker for Photographer of the Year should there be a tie.

End of Year - we’re looking at  having a year end awards banquet sometime in January 2011.

All first place photos from each contest from PJ & Artistic will be judged again to be Photo of the Year in their category. Photographer of the Year will be awarded to the photographer whom has earned the most points from the year from all categories.

Judges - Christobal Perez, active board member of the WPS has opted to stand in as our 2010 Judge for the Year. As a judge, he will not be allowed to participate in the contests for the calendar year of 2010. He will also be responsible for finding the other judges for the year for the categories. Judges will include non-biased judges from people in our community. Considerations for judges include persons in the news industry, local art teachers, someone in the wedding industry, etc. We are always open to recommendations for judges of the year. Please let us know of anyone whom you think would be suitable to help us out with this. Photographer of the Year will automatically assume role of 2011 Judge for the Year and assume the responsibilities as outlined here.

As I said before, more details on how to enter, prizes, trophies, judges etc. will be announced soon!

We also discussed hosting another Shoot Group and it will be held on June 22nd at 3PM. Spots will be limited and there may be fees associated with participation. Further details to come.

Our next meeting is scheduled for February 23rd. A time and location have yet to be set, but will follow soon. We look forward to seeing you there!

ISO - 500 (it was pitch black out minus the sparklers. Surprised I arrived at a decent exposure at 500 )

Wide Angle lens - 19mm

Aperture - 5.6

Shutter 1/30 sec.

My flash must have been set pretty high and I’m guessing 1/4 or 1/2.

This came close to the end of a Spring Portrait session and these are some of my better returning clients.  This child is now in his 2 year old never stops running/laughing/crying stage.  I tried to get the “nice” family portrait for the mom but by the time it was over we knew this year it would be a “relationship” photo. I did get them all looking for a few but the laughter in this photo screams family togetherness and springtime love

Wedding Photographic Society Meeting - April 22nd, 2009

Last night was our 2nd topic-driven meeting for the WPS.  Our very own Robin Lin presented “Packaging & Presentation” and put her bows & boxes where her mouth was by not only showing us her presentation boxes, but where she orders everything from.  From bows to boxes and stickers to shipping, she really opened up how she packages and presents everything from a single small print to large orders!

Also on the nights agenda was door prizes!  Yes, that’s right.. free stuff!!!  We all like free stuff and thanks to Robin’s hard work and our very generous friends at Marathon PressSimply Canvas, Jelly fingers & WHCC over $2000 in gifts were handed out to a few lucky photographers.

After the smoke cleared and the winners were restrained, err, sat back down without any assistance whatsoever, we moved on to photo tithing.  We’ll be posting the photos up on the blog soon so everyone who missed it can see what the fuss is about.  I must say, there were two shots that made me laugh so hard I almost gave my table mates a nose beer shower.

With 34 people in attendance, I think we may have to find a bigger room soon as space was  getting limited.  On behalf of everyone in the WPS, thank you for your attendance last night!  This really is a true measure of how strong & unified our photographic community is which is TRULY a wonderful thing!

Now onto some photos from last night!

Always looking to add new techniques to my lighting arsenal, I was inspired by the techniques of Yervant and Bruce Dorn at WPPI this year to start experimenting more with continuous supplemental light sources. I picked up a relatively inexpensive tungsten video light after Dorn’s seminar from a rep at www.lumierela.com. That evening, I tried out the video light with a model and a stylist who provided a vintage wedding dress for a shoot where we were going for a very dramatic, cinematic look.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday April 22, 2009 at Hi-5 in Raleigh at 7:00pm. This time we’ll be talking about packaging & presentation and this is definitely a sharing event! The evolution of a brand, logo, etc. We’ll also be touching on the entire “client experience” and a little about pricing as well.

Of course, no WPS meeting is complete without Photo Tithing so please submit your photos to submissions@weddingphotographicsociety.com as soon as you can so we can discussion what you love about what you do.

And you want something more….we’ll we’ve got that too. We’ve got over $2000 in SWEET gifts from Simply Canvas, Marathon Press, Jelly Fingers and WHCC. If you have specific questions, email Robin Lin at robin@robinlin.com

Be sure to RSVP as we need to get as much of an accurate head count as possible!
Thanks and see you there!

The bond amongst this family was undeniably strong. A short receiving line gave way to this sentimental moment between the bride and her father embracing immediately following the ceremony.

I don’t recall specifics about the exposure. I know it was a shot of appendage extendura; extend your arm high in the air and hope for the best!  :  )

March 17th, 2009 | WPS Unscripted

It had all the earmarks of a great night.  St. Pattys day, a bunch of photographers, no agenda, pizza and, of course, beer.  :)  This was the trappings of the first ever WPS “unscripted” evening.

A little history first - The format we first agreed on for  WPS Meetings were 6 per year, with each meeting having a “topic” such as business, packaging, branding, marketing, etc.  The first meeting in February had a great turnout and, due to interest in having another meetnig, WPS “unscripted” was born.  The whole idea was to NOT have a topic and talk about anything & everything that we are seeing in todays industry.  From the economy to influences to  strategy - we discussed all different topics in a very open & sharing format.  I, for one, am still feeling that “recharge” effect that only meeting & sharing with your peers can give you.  To have a group of photographers so willing to share what works for them and their business is truly a memorable event!

To help guage the success, I generally keep a count of who signed up to attend and the actual #’s.  After putting up a poll and an announcement, we figured we would have about 8-10 photographer attending.  The final count was 18!!  That’s 180% attendance!  Why am I writing about this?  Well, to me, it’s a simple indication of how powerful and needed a group like this truly is.

So, to hit on some highlights from last night:

Out of 18 photographers attending, roughly 90% were home based
Out of 18 photographers, no one has the same influences
Out of 18 photographers (regardless of experience), everyone learned something last night

The above is really telling about how vast of a range photogrpahers work within and there is always room to learn, share and network with others!

So, to close, I want to personally thank everyone for Chris, Stacy & myself for coming out and opening up with your experiences and knowledge!

And of course, a few photos….
