Tapatalk is available for the WPS Forums!

You spoke and, well, gave us more work, but that’s cool – we still love ya! Tapatalk has been installed and I’ve tested it both on an iPad and Droid phone. Looks like it is working flawlessly. To use it, first you need to download “Tapatalk”. I think it’s $3 for most platforms but it’s a pretty good interface and makes forum browsing/reading super easy.

Once you get Tapatalk, just search for “Wedding Photographic Society” and, voila! You should be able to enter & save your username and password to the app, making reading the forums super easy.

Danger Danger Will Robinson

If you are in Raleigh and a wedding photographer, you probably heard from Will Robinson. He needs a wedding photographer on March 5th and wants to pay you some additional money to give to the MC as he is out of town. He is also deaf so he can’t talk on the phone. Since the wedding is in a few days, he needs your help now.

Did I mention, Will Robinson is also a scammer?

As wedding photographers, we need to put ourselves in the public eye to gain clients. Unfortunately, scammers also know this and try to use that to their advantage. This is a variable of what’s known as a 419 scam. They will pay you via check, credit card or money order then overpay you and ask you to forward the extra to a 3rd party. The problem is, the check/money order is fake or the CC is stolen. You pay out your cash to the 2rd party then get held responsible for that money as the payment method was invalid.

So, be careful out there. The classic signs of a scam like this are very formal english (queens english), being deaf so they cannot use the phone, wanting to overpay you and have you pay a 3rd party (NEVER a good idea) and having a very quick timetable. Of course, all of these “can” be from a legitimate buyer but, as a business, you need to be aware of this.

2010 WPS Convention Video

We here at the WPS enjoy the support of the, hands down, most fabulous vendors in the wedding industry! During our 2010 WPS convention held in Raleigh, NC, the fabulous team of Toni & Chris with Barton Creek Weddings came out and videotaped the entire event!!! Having seen the final product, I know the entire membership of the WPS was floored and thrilled with how it came out.

Toni & Chris, thank you so much for using your talents and vision to really capture the feel of our convention! Can’t wait for 2011!

Photography Organizations- The WPS will PARTY in 2011!

It’s finally here! A great reason to get out and ‘do your thing’, HONEY with one, fun photography organizations! We are having an industry-wide party to celebrate a year of fun, learning, fellowship, and to get ready for the NEW YEAR. We are truly excited for all that is in store for The WPS and our members in 2011. Contests, conventions, & workshops are in the making all to better serve our local and national photography community of talented artists.

So here’s the deal-i-o: Come party with us on January 21st at the new Embassy Suites in Brier Creek. Kick off time is 7PM. Cost per person is $25 and is open to anyone wishing to attend. YOU MUST REGISTER BY JANUARY 15TH!. We will enjoy music stylings by Ryan Pflumm of SPIN, hors d’ouerves, and a cash bar.

GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT! We will be announcing our Photographer of the Year as we round down a year of contests. We’ve got some really gorgeous work this year and are excited about what 2011 will hold for our contests. Our P.O.Y. will be recognized with a trophy, receive a lofty gift from Red Cart (a perpetual stand alone license valued at $999~!) , and will also be featured and highlighted on our blog, forum, Facebook, and Twitter. They will also be given a special badge to proudly display on their website.

AGWPJA Winner – WPS Members

2011 WPS Convention Dates announced!

The 1st annual WPS convention, in 2010, was by all accounts a huge success. We had 56 attendees from 4 states and the feedback we received from everyone who attended was overwhelmingly positive. We are preparing for the 2nd annual convention (in 2011) as we speak but we wanted to get the dates out for everyone.

A couple of things we realized is that many people have day jobs. We are doing our best to structure the convention so there will be multiple opportunities, both during the day and evening, to spread the love to everyone. However, we want YOUR opinion on what you want to see and how we can better organize the convention so you get the most out of it. Please check back in this thread for updated information.

Without further ado, here are the dates:

Date – August 7th – 9th, 2011 (that’s right, 3 days of goodness & photographic love)
Location – Still being worked on but it will be in the Triangle area.
Classes – TBD but we are looking at both 100 & 200 level classes
Speakers – TBD but we’ve got some really good names on the drawing board.

Again, we want to hear from you on what you want!!! Post your thoughts in the 2011 WPS Convention thread so we can better align this convention to your needs!

Time to get lit!!!!

At the WPS we have been working very hard behind the scenes to find worthwhile speakers & topics for every Raleigh Wedding Photographic Society Meeting. Very recently, we learned of an impending visit by a national speaker and acclaimed photographer to our city. Don Gianatti is holding a seminar on November 20th – 21st on, what else, lighting! His Learn to Light workshop is an intensive two day hands on seminar where he cover lighting concepts and execution from simple to wild without using equipment that only a few can afford. This seminar IS the one to attend to cover both basics of lighting to far out and unique setups that will surely set apart your work.

The WPS is proud to have partnered with Don for his Raleigh seminar and is offering all members who would like to attend a small discount. The seminar is $450 which, to be completely frank, is dirt cheap considering the level of expertise and knowledge you stand to gain. You bring your lights, your camera and your photography kung-fu – this is a serious workshop that any photographer, either beginning or veteran, is sure to gain a great deal of knowledge from.

Instructions on how to get the discount are here. You can sign up to the Raleigh workshop here. Please know this workshop only has room for 12 people and there will be nothing for sale – so sign up as once the seats are filled, that’s it.

Oh, but that’s not all!!! (ok, I know.. sorry) Don has graciously agreed to come and speak at an impromptu WPS meeting on Thursday, November 18th, in Raleigh. The topic and location are TBD but be sure to mark your calendars for that evening and keep your eyes on the forums and blog for the announcement.
