This came close to the end of a Spring Portrait session and these are some of my better returning clients. This child is now in his 2 year old never stops running/laughing/crying stage. I tried to get the “nice” family portrait for the mom but by the time it was over we knew this year it would be a “relationship” photo. I did get them all looking for a few but the laughter in this photo screams family togetherness and springtime love

Always looking to add new techniques to my lighting arsenal, I was inspired by the techniques of Yervant and Bruce Dorn at WPPI this year to start experimenting more with continuous supplemental light sources. I picked up a relatively inexpensive tungsten video light after Dorn’s seminar from a rep at www.lumierela.com. That evening, I tried out the video light with a model and a stylist who provided a vintage wedding dress for a shoot where we were going for a very dramatic, cinematic look.

This photograph was taken last summer at a wedding in Youngsville North Carolina. The couple had their wedding and engagement shot done at a friends house (which was more like a mansion). The reception took place in an outdoor dock area, which they had renovated to accommodate all the guests from the wedding. The place looked great, and the wedding planner had done a nice job setting it up. There was one slight problem however, the reception was after sunset, and there were no lights! Only lights that were available were some tiny Christmas lights that were wrapped around the pillars of the dock, and the multi colored DJ light that kept spinning out of control. Of course, everyone else loved the lights as it created a great “mood”. I’m sure some of you other photographers will agree with me that the “mood” usually means nightmare for our photography. However, I was still determined to get some shots and wanted to try something new.

“How do I pull this off?” I thought. My second shooter didn’t bring a flash, so I had to let him borrow my 2nd flash. Of course, he went with direct flash and started covering the dancing. Now I’m left with only one flash. I absolutely despise direct flash, so I figured I try to cover the reception shots with off camera lighting. I setup my 580ex on a light stand, attached a pocket wizard, and decided to shoot it at full power… backlighting my subject & praying for the best. Surprisingly, I was not only able to get my main subject backlit, but there was enough light bouncing around to create a slight fill. The catch was, I would have to frame my shots, wait for the right moment, keep an eye on both the main subject and my light stand behind them, make sure they are covering the light stand, manually focus the subject, and then fire at the right moment. Pretty difficult since everyone is dancing away, constantly moving, and there isn’t even enough ambient to see my light stand normally… let alone through the viewfinder. However, with some practice, I got the hang of it. I liked the result so much, I decided to cover almost all of the reception that way. I was a bit worried how the B&G would take it, but they absolutely loved every single shot from the reception.

This particular shot is one of my favorites as the bride is dancing with the flower girl. I used a Canon 5D, and the cheap 50mm f/1.8. As I said, there was almost no ambient, so I shot at 1600 ISO. I really wanted to let a lot of the light in, so my aperture was set at f/4.5 and shutter was at 1/100th.

This image was created when the guys went outside to celebrate the wedding by lighting up some cigars. So, I waited patiently for the them to get settled and then placed my strobe behind the best man (on a light stand). There were several images but I thought this was the best one of the group.

It was shot with a Canon 5D and I used a Nikon SB-28 set on manual at a 1/4 power, triggered by Pocket Wizards. The ISO was 800, f-stop was at 4.0 at a 30th of a second. The lens was a 24-70 at 70 mm.

This photo was shot at Highgrove in Fuquay Varina. The bride wanted a photo with her new husband and her dog as well. I opted to crop off the faces of the B&G to bring your eye down to the dog at the bottom of the frame. If you notice, your eye floats up to the kiss but always goes to the nice doggie.

It was an overcast day but I added a little softbox, to the left of the subjects about 7 ft high, to give the image a little bit of a pop. It was at a slow shutter speed (30th of a sec.) so I could grab some ambient light due to the time of day and the f-stop was at 4.0.

The only pet peeve I have is that the dogs ears are not in the gray area of the frame. Other than that I think it works.

The below shot was taken during an engagement session at night in Charleston, SC. Out plan was to start at sunset and use the beautiful Charleston lanterns as a supplemental light source and a video light as the main. As all well laid plans tend to unfold, the cold weather drained the video light battery fairly quickly so I was left with strobes & available light. This was shot @ 1/10th using an on camera strobe bounced off glass to my right. I wanted something else in the photo besides them so I waited until another couple was walking by. The strobe froze both of them and turned out to be one of my favorites from the session! If I could do it over, I would of panned a bit differently so the light didn’t streak through his head.
