General WPS Information
Pinned What is the WPS?
Welcome to The Wedding & Portrait Society (WPS)!
Welcome to The Wedding & Portrait Society (WPS). We're a network of professional wedding & portrait photographers who come together to collaborate on photographic ideas, thoughts, and information in an attempts to elevate the artistic, technical, and business standards of the wedding photographic community. Membership in the WPS offers many professional & personal growth opportunities via monthly educational meetings, networking, critiques, and general camaraderie during such gatherings. WPS meetings, forums, blog submissions, & web pages are open to any and all professional wedding photographers throughout the world.
The WPS's origins date back to 2005, when Raleigh, NC wedding photographer Christobal Perez organized quarterly photography meetings in an effort to help build relationships, share knowledge amongst peers, and help create a competitive, yet supportive photographic community. The spirit of Christobal's movement has grown exponentially since that time and has since evolved into the WPS (which became official in 2009) with the further support of other local photographers & Brian Mullins. Leaders & members of the WPS donate their time to organize topic discussions with guest speakers, collaborate on ideas and offer guidance, all without compensation.
Membership
To join the WPS, you need to meet the following minimum criteria:
- Actively pursuing business as a professional wedding and/or portrait photographer (or aspiring to be a professional wedding and/or portrait photographer).
- A professional photography website showing your current work.
- Willingness to share your knowledge with others (we don't ask for state secrets but a general willingness to be open and help others when possible).
There are two levels of membership in the WPS; aspiring and professional.

Worst Nightmares and an amazing story!
For those that don't know, the WPS grew out of a local "get-together" of photographers who would talk, share and help each other out. Trying to get a group of photographers together is easy enough when it's the same photographers month after month, right? How about when the market explodes with new talent and there is no centralized system, group or resources for them to call on for questions, advice or, worst of all, emergencies.
How many of you, when you first started, had the forethought to have a contact list of photographers with you, in case of emergencies? Probably not too many. I'm not talking about a week before the wedding, we are talking a day before, or the day of. One of our members just went thru this and, let me say, I was amazed at how quickly the WPS community proved it's worth. Here is the message that went out:

My Love Letter to the WPS
As some of you know, on Friday March 31st I was on my way to Pinehurst to attend a rehearsal and get set up for a wedding on Saturday. A few miles from the venue, the car in front of me slammed on the brakes suddenly to avoid hitting the truck in front of it turning left on a hidden driveway. With little room to stop, I slammed on the brakes and swerved on to the shoulder to avoid a collision. I hit a tree going 45 miles an hour, causing a level three butterfly fracture of my right femur, a broken left thumb, and numerous other bangs and scratches requiring stitches (oh and a lovely burn on my neck from the seatbelt). You can only imagine the thoughts that ran through my head as i lay on the side of the road, was put in the ambulance, and rolled swiftly through the doors of Moore Regional Hospital. And second only to calling my husband, I was thinking of all of you.

You are filthy!

The wonderful staff at Southeastern Camera is donating their time on August 14th, 2012 from 10:30am – 1:30pm to professionally clean your cameras while you enjoy the WPS convention! This is typically a paid service but Southeastern Camera has been a huge supporter of us so we are very proud to have them at the convention with us.
All you need to do is sign up and drop your camera off to them (make sure you go back by to pick it up).

Hello from the SF Bay Area
Posted by Scott Mosher - May 22 2013 10:36 AM
Hi!
I'm Scott, and I'm from San Jose, CA. I've been shooting weddings & portraits for about 4-5 years now. I started off shooting sports but was asked to photograph my in laws wedding, and it all started from there!
I shoot with Nikon gear, though I've had some experience with Canon through my sports shooting days. I'm always interested in assisting/2nd shooting should any opportunities come my way!
Hello from Pa.

Hello everyone!
Thanks for having me. I'm from the wonderful Lehigh Valley in Pa. My wife Kristi and I are in our 11th. year shooting weddings from local to Pittsburgh to the Chesapeake. I think my quest for a kinder, nicer forum has ended.
Dalisa Cooper
Posted by Brian Mullins - Apr 24 2013 10:41 AM
Dalisa Cooper, with her many years of experience in the publishing and marketing end of the wedding industry, is the business end of Altf. Dalisa is also known as the "artist tamer" - keeping JMC focused and somewhat in line to assure success. Keeping a happy, healthy business with an impeccable reputation all while keeping the Altf team on task and running smoothly is a daily accomplishment.
Take home a strong workflow, keys to managing and maintaining a successful, busy office and learn the importance and how-to of client communication. Walk away with a complete workflow schedule and time management outline from the wedding day through album completion including blogging, social media, client scheduling, vendor images and implementing the Altf "one day" workflow. Whether it’s the lead photographer or someone who handles the front office, the topics will be discussed from both perspectives.

Pixel2Canvas - Hump Day Blue Plate Special
Posted by CanvasRox - May 22 2013 12:52 PM
I'm not sure WHERE to post this - hence my just throwin' it out there!
These prices INCLUDE SHIPPING - which is great when you want to bank one or two.
At P2C we have a FLAT shipping fee of $19 - so whether you order one or 10 canvases - it's $19. Except when you order from this special!
If you'd like to read ALL the funtastic details, click HERE for access to the newsletter.
I'm happy to answer any and all questions you may have. FYI - I tried to get a footing over at the DWF - however their posting rules for vendors was WAY too restrictive - I'm the kind of gal who not only posts stuff about our sales, but will also get in there on ALL the topics of the forum. I couldn't do that there.
I'm looking forward to talking with y'all!

Second Shooter Available
Posted by Lorraine Martin - May 09 2013 08:28 PM
First off, I will admit that I am still fairly new to this business and VERY new to North Carolina. I am interested in eventually getting into Weddings in the Raleigh area (where I live) and am wanting some experience and to see the ebb and flow of wedding photography via a second shooter position. I do understand that second shooter's are not always shooting, and that a lot of times they are holding lighting, carrying bags, etc. I am totally up for this too! So, if anyone is interested, I'm offering the following to experienced photographer who are willing to "take me under their wing" and allow the me the opportunity to second shoot:
1. No expected compensation - though I'm not turning down gas money, if offered (obviously!).
2. Reliable 2nd shooter willing to help with any other tasks throughout the wedding.
3. No direct competition since I eventually plan to be in a different city.
4. All images will be given to you for your use, provided I do get credit as a second shooter. I will not post these for my own promotional use.
If interested, please e-mail me at elizabethrainephotography@gmail.com
I am still working on getting a blog/website up and running, but do have a Facebook page with some work on it. www.Facebook.com/ElizabethRainePhotography

Hello from Illinois!
Posted by Elizabeth - May 05 2013 07:51 PM
Hi, I'm Elizabeth, one of the DWF ex-pats! I'm a wedding and portrait photographer from East Central Illinois. I've been in business for nearly ten years. My studio is housed in a circa-1870 building in our historic downtown area. Right now, I'm making renovations to house my new boudoir and pin up studio, so I can slowly transition out of weddings over the next few years.
I'm so glad that Brian invited all of us to join the WPS, and I'm happy to meet all of you!
