We would like to thank Brad Matthews of Wescott Lighting for loaning us the Ice Light by Jerry Ghionis. A lot of photographers love the light and wanted to buy it on the spot. Matthews also hung out and spoke to the group about lighting and thier soft box products.

We would also like to thank Michael McLamb with Fleurtations for creating stunning bouquets for the brides. And what is a bride without a wedding dress? How can we forget about the gowns porvided by Maggi Bridal. Last but not least the talented artists Ginger Mullins and Margo Williams for their beautiful hair & makeup services for our models

See you at the next Portrait Palooza!

PORTRAIT PALOOZA WINNERS
1st Place | Annemie Tonken
- The lighting in this picture is perfect. It gives a little glow in the background, but looks as though there is just a spotlight on her. The ambiance is very sophisticated and even romantic. You really draw your focus the bride in the picture and nothing else in the space, which is great. This was hands down an office favorite.

2nd Place | Annemie Tonken
- Very similiar to #1 (this was a tough call for us). The biggest difference is the lighting. The lighting was used in the same space in a completely different way. It created a new atmosphere with the same bride, in the same space, with a completely different look. It's amazing what a little change in lighting can do to an entire picture. We loved how you can capture the entire bar in this picture as a background, but it doesn't deter from the focus itself, the bride.

3rd Place | Perry Adams / Perry Vaile Photography
- This black and white photo was absolutley gorgeous. It looked as though it was taken back in time. Nothing was missed in this photo. The lighting was perfect, the scene was perfect, even the focus was perfect. Again, the lighting from above was a perfect balance for this picture. Not too much and not too little. I think it could have focused a little bit more on the bride iteself, but all in all this was definetely a top contender.

4th Place | Michelle Lyerly / Michelle Lyerly Photography and Design
- Loved the exposed brick behind this bride and the completely different look. We loved this picture mostly because of the way any bride can relate to a picture like this with the poise and elegance. The one thing that might have changed a little is the lighting. It was a little bright. The bride looked a little washed out as did some of the brick.

5th Place | Christopher Nieto / Nieto Photography
- Although it wasn't a top picture, we loved the shadowing effect in this picture. Who knew that our little branches could give off such an amazing effect for pictures as a shadow on top? The way this photo was captured with the shadowing and the background put it in our top 5!

2012 PORTRAIT PALOOZA contest submission is open! It was a great time had by everyone at 2012 WPS Portrait Palooza last night. We held this one at the fantastic wedding reception venue, Ginger Mullins and Margo Williams for their truly inspired hair & makeup services for our models, Michael from Fleurtationsfor their gorgeous bridal bouquets and Amy & Laura from Maggi Bridal.

The PP contest is now open for submissions and will close at midnight on March 3rd. Each photographer is allowed to submit two of their images for the judging panel who will consist of the management of 1705 Prime and Rocky Top Catering. What makes Portrait Palooza different than any other "shoot out" style of photography gathering is that this is a win-win situation for everyone involved. The photographer of the winning image will win a seat at the 3-day 2012 WPS annual convention - a priceless opportunity to see some of the worlds top wedding photographers. The venue may also utilize the image for their advertising with photo credit given to the winning photographer.

Submit your images by clicking here!

We at The Wedding Photographic Society would also like to thank Brad Matthews from Wescott Lighting for speaking to the group and demonstrating the amazing Ice Light from Jerry Ghionis along with a variety of their soft boxes. We are thrilled to be one of the first formal groups to use the Ice Light at a shootout event. Brad selflessly brought out all of his gear to both show and let people utilise it for the contest. Talk about getting to play with some serious toys!!!

The results of the contest will be announced as part of the next WPS Raleigh meeting. Based on what we saw on the backs of the cameras last night, there will be some very stiff competition - best of luck to everyone! Now here are a few behind the scenes photos taken by the WPS staff.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

Portrait Palooza - Renaissance Hotel, North Hills {Raleigh}

Posted by , in Portrait Palooza 24 February 2011 · 71 views

Well our second Bi-Annual Portrait Palooza was well received..... to say the least! With 30+ photographers in attendance, the Renaissance Hotel at the not-so-shabby North Hills in Raleigh was hopping with brides, flashes, firing, and fun. We, the WPS, conceptualized the shoot-out style event and put it into play last August.

The concept you ask? 4 models-10 minutes-1 GRAND PRIZE! In a nutshell, each registered photographer has 10 minutes to shoot one of our brides anywhere on the premises of the Renaissance, minus the great outdoors. They are allowed to bring in their own props, equipment, & helpers.

The brides were treated to a bunch of pampering. The hair and makeup arts of Ginger Mullins of Tre Bella stepped in and acted as our stylist. Have you seen Tre Bella gowns before? WOW is putting it mildly. These gowns are stunning! Our brides looked stellar.

We are also were honored with the presence of Toni&Chris Wheaton of Barton Creek Weddings. They're known locally here in Raleigh for their cinematic films so we're so excited to see what they come up with for us as their capture of our Portrait Palooza event.

Last, but not least, Tim Sayer, our WPS 2010 Photographer of the Year was at hand to share his expertise in narrowing down selections for contests. He ran through his 10 favorite pics that he took from the last Portrait Palooza and showed the photographers how he went through the process of discovering his winning image. The holding room was occupied with 25+ people at any given time.

September will be here before you know and we will be kicking off our 3rd Bi-Annual Portrait Palooza. We look forward to having you there!
