Has anyone had any experiences taking on interns? Worth the effort? Expectations?

I keep getting requests and I keep saying no. I honestly don't know how to use them effectively to make it worth their time (and mine). Would love to hear more on this.

I talked with the interns with the wedding magazine on Wednesday night...they are seniors at ECU and they work for the magazine but instead of cash payment they earn credits for working. I'm thinking its worth looking into. I'd love to find a senior at Meredith that could edit for me as an intern :)

I had an intern from UNC last year. I think if you are going to take it on, make sure you get the exact requirements from the college of what the intern is SUPPOSED to be doing. Then, set up clear expectations with your intern. You will also want to make sure that your intern is dedicated and excited/willing to learn, not just fulfilling a required class. I found it was more work and stress on my end than anticipated. I had many student teachers when I used to be an art teacher and it was a very different situation back then.

I had someone contact me about an internship through UNC. The amount of hours they wanted to work was around 20 a week for 2 months. I said that I was more interested in someone working less each week for a longer amount of time because by the time you train them to do something they're finished. I am interested in finding someone, but I'm not really sure how to go about it. Plus there's the paid vs. unpaid question?
